Wouldn't it be helpful if we had a brief
OUTLINE OF THE BIBLE?

GENESIS - the book of beginnings... beginning with the Garden of Eden where God promised that the 'Seed of the Woman' would come from Abraham, Isaac, Jacob & his 12 sons, and that SEED would be a blessing to the whole world. From chapter 37 through SO, the emphasis is placed on the life of Joseph and ends with him being placed in a gold coffin in Egypt.

EXODUS - 70 of Jacob's descendants entered Egypt, and after 400 years of slavery, the Children of Israel, consisting of about two million adult males, with their wives and children, were delivered from bondage by Moses.

LEVITICUS - God gave all the dietary and moral laws for the Jews, and taught them about the future Messiah by the establishment of various offerings by which they were to worship Him.

NUMBERS - The Lord taught the priests and the people about each one's responsibility.

DEUTERONOMY - A re-cap by Moses of the first four books , and ends with the death of Moses and appointment of Joshua as the leader of the Children of Israel..

JOSHUA - Battles, testings and a beautiful display of the Lord's power when the Jew's trusted Him.

JUDGES - God appointed Judges over the people. (God was their King) The Lord administered harsh discipline upon the people when they were disobedient and living in apostasy, but when they confessed their sin, the Lord, in grace, gave another judge to them.

RUTH - The story of this Moabite woman and a judge by the name of Boaz who married her teaches about the grace of God. Ruth became the great-great grandmother of Jesus.

1 SAMUEL - Samuel was the last judge in Israel, and he was also a priest and a prophet. When the people demanded a king, the Lord instructed Samuel to appoint Saul, who ruled 40 years.

11 SAMUEL - records what happened during the 40-year reign of Saul and, because of his carnality and disobedience to God's Word, he was replaced by David, who ruled Israel during the next 40 years.

1 KINGS - David appointed Solomon to follow him, and he also ruled 40 years. After him, Solomon's son, Rehoboam became king, and because of his bad decisions, the nation was split .....10 tribes lived in the northern kingdom called Israel, and 2 tribes in the nation called Judah. This book records the historical record of the good and bad kings in each nation.

11 KINGS - Here we meet the prophet Elijah and many other prophets who were sent to declare God's Word to Israel, but still there was great apostasy in the land, so God administered the 5th Cycle of Discipline and they were taken into Babylonian captivity.

1 CHRONICLES and 11 CHRONICLES - These two books record Jewish genealogies and God's viewpoint of the kings of Judah who came after David.

EZRA through NEHEMIAH - These two books record the return of the Jews to their land and the rebuilding of the temple.

ESTHER - Through the story of this young Jewish girl who went from captivity to becoming queen of Persia, we learn about God's loving care for His people in captivity.

JOB - Job is the oldest book in the Bible. It was written long before the LA W was given to Moses. The extreme pressure Job endured and the historical events in the life of this great believer are presented here. It also introduces us to the warfare between God and Satan, which some theologians call 'The Angelic Conflict' and 'The Invisible War'.

PSALMS - Many of these Psalms were written by king David, but some were from Moses and unnamed writers as well.

PROVERBS - These words of wisdom were recorded by Solomon, but much of the advice was from his father David.

ECCLESIASTES - This is a record of the thinking of Solomon in his old age when he was searching for happiness without the Lord. In the last chapter, we see Solomon back in fellowship with the Lord, giving good advice to young people about how their lives should honor the Lord.

SONG OF SOLOMON - While out of fellowship, Solomon desired but was rejected by a very beautiful woman.

ISAIAH, JEREMIAH, LAMENTATIONS & EZEKIEL - were prophets who ministered to the Jews prior to and also during the 70 years of their captivity.

HOSEA through MALACHI - these prophets are referred to as 'the minor prophets'. Malachi ends with God's promise to send His messenger 'Elijah' to them before the appearance of their Messiah. (that messenger was John the baptist)

BETWEEN THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS, THERE WERE 400 SILENT YEARS DURING WHICH THERE WAS NO WORD FROM THE LORD. During those years, a mass of man-made tradition was created, replacing the LA W given to Moses by the Lord. Also, two very religious sects arose ... we know them as the Scribes and Pharisees. Amid all this false teaching and human viewpoint, the God-Man, JESUS CHRIST, entered the world.

MATTHEW - In this gospel account, Jesus Christ is present as the KING OF ISRAEL. His genealogy is recorded starting with Abraham, the first Jew, and ending with the birth of Jesus, the Christ. This genealogy records the succession of the kings of Judah, beginning with Saul, and how that line was cut off with Jeconiah (Coniah) before the 5th cycle of discipline uprooted and dispersed the nation throughout the world.

MARK - In this gospel account, we see the WORK of the Messiah, Le. His miracles, which were His credit cards presented to the Jews so they would know He was their Messiah.

LUKE - The perfect humanity of Jesus is presented in this gospel. In it are recorded many of the same incidents as the first two, but with a slightly different view of them.

JOHN - This gospel presents the Lord Jesus Christ as GOD IN FLESH. No genealogy is given here, because He had no beginning nor end... He has always existed eternally.

ACTS - Acts is a transitional book that was never intended to teach Bible Doctrine to Church Age believers, but to tell about events that occurred between the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven and the completion of the canon of scripture in 94 A.D. Many gifts were given to believers during that period, i.e. tongues, healing, raising the dead, etc. in order to get a hearing for the Gospel, but once the Word of God was complete, the only remaining gift today is the gift of Pastor- Teacher for the building up of the 'body of Christ', which is His bride ... the CHURCH.

ROMANS through 1 JOHN - These books are the epistles of the apostle Paul and include his prison epistles. They contain all the doctrine for Church-age believers to help them grow and mature in the Christian life..

1 JOHN, 11 JOHN and 111 JOHN - These three epistles were written by the apostle John and also contain doctrinal teaching for Church-age believers.

HEBREWS - God the Holy Spirit did not choose to tell us who the author of this book was. It was written to Jews who were dispersed throughout the known world. Knowledge of the Old Testament scriptures is essential to understanding this book.

JAMES - This author of this epistle was the half-brother of Jesus. He emphasized the necessity of putting Bible doctrine that has been learned and metabolized into practice.

1 PETER and 11 PETER - In these two epistles, the apostle Peter tells how he matured as a believer, and he warns Christians how they can avoid false teachers and their false teachings.

JUDE - Jude was another half -brother of Jesus. (he is called Judas... not Iscariot... in the gospels) Jude's emphasis is on the thoughts and actions of UNGODLY men throughout aU generations, and tells why they are ungodly.

REVELATION - The human author, the apostle John, wrote this book during the last few years of his life when he was banished to the Isle of Patmos. A thorough knowledge of the entire Old Testament is essential for understanding this book. It was given by God the Holy Spirit to reveal things to come to believers, and most of it concerns the 7 -year period called the Tribulation.
