How is it possible to be
guided by the Holy Spirit and have your life glorify the Lord? First,
you must realize that, although you are a believer, you still have a
very active sin nature that wants to have its own way with you, and
the Holy Spirit, who indwells you, wants to guide and control your
life. In the seventh chapter of the book of Romans, the apostle Paul
tells about the struggle he experienced between his sinful nature and
his new nature.
When you decide that you want
your life to glorify the Lord, you must acknowledge any known sin in
your life to God the Father. The principle of confessing sin and who
is actually effected by our sins can be seen in Psalm 51 :3,4a. King
David said it like this: "I acknowledge my transgression, and my sin
is constantly before me. Against You and You only have I sinned and
done this evil in Your sight," (ALL sin is against God)
When you desire to know God's
will for your life, He will provide a prepared Pastor-Teacher who
knows the original languages of scripture and can teach the Word of
God accurately.
1 Peter 2:2 tells the new
believer: "As a newborn baby, desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that you may grow thereby by receiving it." Our faith can only be
strengthened through a daily, personal intake of God's Word, and
Romans 10:17 tells us that "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the
Word of God."
Sound, accurate Bible
teaching promotes spiritual growth. The Lord tells us in Isaiah
28:9,10 that knowledge of God's Word is attained by first learning and
applying simple truths, and then as we grow we will be able to
understand more complex doctrines of the Word: 'To whom shall He teach
knowledge, and whom shall He make to understand doctrine? Those who
are weaned from milk and taken away from the breast. For precept must
be upon precept; line upon line; line upon line; here a little and
there a little."
When we were little children,
we learned by simple words and illustrations, and the same is true in
our spiritual growth.
